Actelion / Johnson & Johnson.

C-Matrix developed and led the internal communication strategy for the multibillion-dollar acquisition of Swiss biopharma company Actelion by Johnson & Johnson (J&J). This acquisition, spanning Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, and North and South America, was one of the largest in the pharmaceutical industry. C-Matrix identified and addressed key challenges and milestones affecting employees.

Leveraging its extensive experience with mergers and acquisitions, C-Matrix implemented a solution-oriented approach that considered cultural differences and the needs of key stakeholders. This ensured effective communication and a smooth transition for employees during this transformative process.

Key Objectives

Design and implement a communication programme to support the integration of Actelion into J&J’s global structure. The goal was to retain employees, bridge cultural differences, foster a positive perception of the transformation across all business units, divisions and functions.

Approach

C-Matrix executed a strategic campaign covering all major business areas and functions. The measures included:

  • Encouraging Dialogue: Regular CEO town halls, personal meetings, and digital updates to ensure transparency and address employee concerns.
  • Cultural Integration: Tailored initiatives to facilitate the transition from Actelion’s family-oriented culture to J&J’s global corporate environment.
  • Celebrating Milestones: Special events, such as a dinner at the “Restaurant des Alpes” in the Swiss Parliament, to recognise the completion of the integration process.

Result

The approach enabled a successful integration of Actelion into J&J. Employees felt heard and supported, resulting in low turnover rates. Transparent and timely communication allowed management to effectively unite the teams and ensure the achievement of integration goals.
